    Dobele, Latvia — During the Nazi occupation of Riga, Latvia, in 1941, those Jews who had not been taken prisoner were kept in a ghetto. The eyes of the Gestapo — the Nazi’s secret police — were especially trained on those believed to be part of the underground resistance. Isaac Kleiman, then 17 years of age, was among those targeted: he was a Jew, the Nazis had killed his family and he was part of the underground, an outgrowth of his membership in Betar, a Zionist youth group.     RIGA, LATVIA [ANR] – Unemployment is an increasing problem in Latvia. Eleven percent of the population in Riga are unemployed and in some rural districts the figures are as high as sixty percent. The cities still offer a few job opportunities, but outside of Riga it is quite hopeless. Although foreign company investment is rising rapidly in Riga, employment offers are for young, energetic, enterprising and educated people. Those over the age of 35 are not considered because they do not speak a foreign language, they lack appropriate education and are not computer literate.   • Oldest Estonian Adventist Dies at 106

    Tartu, ESTONIA. Aliide Pedraudse, a member of the Tartu Seventh-day Adventist church, Estonia, for 59 years, died on 28 May at the age of 106, being the oldest person in this Baltic country. The funeral took place at the Tartu Adventist Church on Sunday, 2 June. “She was a very active and talented member, a flower arranger, a valued member of the church choir and a splendid cook during our various church activities,” said Tõnu Jugar, pastor of the Tartu Adventist church.   • New Rehabilitation Centre for Drug & Alcohol Addicted in Narva

    NARVA, ESTONIA – [ANR] The official opening of a Rehabilitation Centre in Narva, north-east Estonia, was held on 4 May. In the opening ceremony Tonu Jugar, president of the Estonian Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, said, “This centre will help us to serve more efficiently the society and to fulfil part of our mission – to heal and help people with their needs”.
