• ADRA Update on Asia Tsunami

ST. ALBANS, ENGLAND [ANR] – Three weeks after the Asia tsunami disaster, the death toll is now estimated over 159,000 (this figure is now anticipated to rise to over 189,000), with over 24,000 still missing. Some 2.2 million people have been displaced while over 1,026,000 are believed to be homeless. These figures are expected to increase. Relief efforts are still critical: Some populations in remote areas in Banda Aceh Province in Indonesia remain difficult to reach. Treating injuries from the tsunami and earthquake is still a concern. In India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka, reconstruction efforts have started simultaneously with the relief efforts. No disease outbreaks have been reported. Isolated…

  • Social Support Program For The Disadvantaged Of Riga

RIGA, LATVIA [ANR] – Unemployment is an increasing problem in Latvia. Eleven percent of the population in Riga are unemployed and in some rural districts the figures are as high as sixty percent. The cities still offer a few job opportunities, but outside of Riga it is quite hopeless. Although foreign company investment is rising rapidly in Riga, employment offers are for young, energetic, enterprising and educated people. Those over the age of 35 are not considered because they do not speak a foreign language, they lack appropriate education and are not computer literate. People living in the country can usually provide enough food for themselves by growing their own…

  • Making a Difference

“For the last couple of years we have been helping orphanages in larger cities. This year we decided to investigate some other orphanages in smaller, poorer sections of Lithuania. As Director, do you see that your orphanage has any needs? And if you do, would you make a list and email it to us for examination?” Our speech to the directors of those orphanages in Lithuania were simple, concise, and to the point, but how diversified the answers we received. “We have 10 computers, but would you buy us 10 newer computers?” “We don’t have any needs, thank you.” “It’s not every day that we have two young men come…

  • ADRA Latvia Christmas Project in Zālīte’s Boarding–School

Bauska, LATVIA. In the fall of 2002 ADRA Latvia in co–operation with ADRA Denmark implemented Christmas project for Zālīte’s Boarding–School of Bauska region “Let the joy be in every heart”. Zālīte’s Boarding–School for retarded children was founded in 1968. School is located in the former manor house, which was partly adjusted for the needs of the school. This boarding–school provides elementary education for 112 children, twelve of whom are seriously retarded. Almost all children come from disadvantageous or broken families. Unemployment and alcoholism is characteristic for the families of these children, and so this school is not only a place where they can study, but also a shelter from the…

  • Lithuania: To Look After Orphans

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans . . .” The above text from the epistle of James is a text that I encourage all who read this article to try. Over the 8 years that I have worked in Lithuania and the 26 years that I have lived, I have never received such fulfilment, such joy, such satisfaction, as I have these last two Christmases. During the summer of 2001, I received a letter from ADRA Germany asking about the conditions of the orphanages in Eastern Europe but more concretely in Lithuania. I had never really visited any orphanages and…

  • Adventists Clean Up The Environment

TARTU, ESTONIA. Seventh-day Adventist Church members in Tartu, Estonia, organised an Environmental day on Sunday, 2 June during which they cleaned up a small valley in Tartu that was used as a dumping ground for years by some of the locals. The Tartu City Cleaning Service suggested that church members clean up this valley. Madis Tammeorg, head of the City Cleaning Service said that “this beautiful valley could become a place for the Tartu people to come with their families to rest and enjoy the beauty of nature.” “Those who took part in the Tartu valley cleaning worked really hard and found different kinds of interesting trash,” commented Lauri Beekmann,…
